El Paso, Austin Participate in “Cities for Life”
On November 30, abolitionists in Austin and El Paso organized activities in commemoration of Cities for Life Day. The Cities for Life campaign, an annual initiative sponsored by the Community of Sant’Egidio, commemorates the first abolition of the death penalty by a European state. In 1786, Peter Leopold Joseph declared the end of the death penalty in his Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

To celebrate this historic event, more than 1,300 cities and towns around the world illuminated a well-known monument, such as the Plaza de Santa Ana in Madrid and the Colosseum in Rome, to show their support for the end of the death penalty throughout the world.

El Pasoans Against the Death Penalty lit the Franklin Mountain Star. Members of Pax Christi Austin prayed a Rosary at St. Mary Cathedral for an end to state-sponsored executions.
