Description

Death Penalty Expert Stephen B. Bright will speak at a special afternoon program and reception sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) on Wednesday, July 16th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Federal Courthouse, 515 Rusk Avenue, 11th Floor, Houston, Texas 77002.

Bright, a Yale Law School Professor & President and Senior Counsel at Southern Center for Human Rights, will speak on “The Death Penalty for the Marginalized – and the Complicity that Makes it Possible.” Previously a public defender in Washington, DC, and a legal services attorney in the coal fields of eastern Kentucky, Bright has taught at Yale Law School since 1993. Subjects of his litigation, teaching and writing include legal representation for poor people accused of crimes, capital punishment, racial discrimination in the criminal courts, human rights in

prisons and jails, and judicial independence. He has argued death penalty cases successfully before juries and state and federal appellate courts, including the United States Supreme Court, where he won reversals of two capital cases because of racial discrimination in jury selection. He received the American Bar Association’s Thurgood Marshall Award in 1998. Georgia’s legal newspaper, the Daily Report, named him “Newsmaker of the Year” in 2003 for his role in bringing about the creation of a public defender system in Georgia.

* Light refreshments will be served. Formal presentation begins at 4:30 p.m.
