TEXAS—-new execution date

Man convicted of killing deputy set for execution

An execution date of March 11 has been set for an Indiana-native convicted
of killing an off-duty Bexar County sheriff's deputy 10 years ago,
according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Joshua Maxwell, 31, was convicted in 2002 for kidnapping, robbing and
shooting Sgt. Rudy Lopes II in October 2000, according to the Bexar County
district attorney's office. Maxwell and his girlfriend, Tessie McFarland,
were arrested in California after a nationwide crime spree during which an
Indiana man was also slain.

McFarland took a plea deal in the Lopes case and was sentenced to life in
prison.
