A Dallas County jury has sentenced Naim Rasool Muhammad to death for drowning his two young sons, Elijah and Naim, in 2011. The jury deliberated for less than 10 minutes before convicting Naim Muhammad of capital murder. After hearing closing arguments in the penalty phase of the trial earlier today, the jury returned three hours later with a sentence of death.

This is the first new death sentence in Dallas County this year, but the ninth overall since 2008. It is the second new death sentence statewide in 2013.
Dallas County leads the state in the imposition of new death sentences over the last five years. Of the nine men sentenced to death in Dallas County in this time period, six are African American and two are Hispanic.
