TEXAS:

3 held in slaying outside VFW Hall

Police arrested 3 suspects Thursday morning in connection with the October
slaying of a 33-year-old man who was trying to fend off a robbery attempt
against his mother-in-law.

Charged with capital murder, Edgar Velasquez remained jailed on a $1
million bond stemming from the Oct. 10 fatal shooting of Manuel Barrera
outside of the VFW Hall on the Southwest Side.

The San Antonio Express-News is not naming the two other men who were
arrested because they have not yet been formally charged with a crime. At
7 a.m., the 2 were awaiting processing at the Bexar County Magistrate's
Office.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Velasquez,17, is accused of
shooting and killing Barrera in an apparent botched robbery. At 10:30 p.m.
that evening, Barrera walked his wife and mother-in-law to her car in the
2200 block Frio City Road when 3 men in a blue minivan approached and
demanded the woman's purse, the affidavit said.

Instead of handing over the purse, Barrera confronted one of the men who
got out of the minivan, "allowing his mother-in-law to get into her
vehicle and drive off," according to the document. The affidavit alleges
Barrera was then shot and killed by Velasquez.

The other 2 men arrested with Velasquez are accused of taking part in the
slaying, including helping to abandon and burn the minivan used in the
shooting.
