A Bexar County judge has approved a motion filed by the District Attorney’s Office to withdraw the September 7 execution date of Juan Castillo due to Hurricane Harvey. According to the motion, “A portion of Mr. Castillo’s defense team resides and works in Harris County and the surrounding areas, and has been affected by Hurricane Harvey.” The judge rescheduled the execution to occur on December 14, 2017.
Castillo was was convicted and sentenced to death for the 2003 robbery and murder of Tommy Garcia, Jr. in San Antonio.

This is the fifth execution date to be stayed or withdrawn in Texas this year. The State has put five men to death in 2017; there currently are six executions scheduled in the remaining months of the year.
