New Death Sentence in Dallas County

A Dallas County jury has convicted and sentenced Matthew Johnson, 38, of Garland, to death for the burning death of Nancy Harris, 76, a convenience store clerk who was set on fire during a robbery in 2012.

This is the second death sentence in Dallas County this year, but the tenth for Dallas County since 2008.  It is the seventh new death sentence statewide in 2013.

Dallas County leads the state in the imposition of new death sentences over the last five years.  Of the ten men sentenced to death in Dallas County in this time period, seven are African American and two are Hispanic.
