TEXAS—-impending execution

Texas man set to die for 1993 double slaying

Attorneys for a condemned Texas prisoner are contending he's too mentally
ill to be executed for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend and her daughter
almost 17 years ago in Houston.

45-year-old Gerald Eldridge is set for lethal injection Tuesday evening
for a shooting spree that also left his son and another man wounded.

Eldridge's lawyers argue in appeals to courts that Eldridge is delusional
and clueless about his punishment. The U.S. Supreme Court has held that
prisoners must be aware of their punishment to be eligible for execution.

Prosecutors respond that Eldridge has a history of faking mental illness
and is doing that now to avoid the Texas death chamber.

He's the 1st of 3 convicted killers set to die this week in Texas.

Texas Man Set To Die Tuesday For 1993 Double Slaying

Attorneys for a condemned Texas prisoner say he is too mentally ill to be
executed for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend and her daughter almost 17
years ago in Houston.

Gerald Eldridge, 45, is set for lethal injection at 6:00p.m. Tuesday for a
shooting spree that also left his son and another man wounded.

The String of Fatal Events

Records indicate Eldridge broke into the home ex-girlfriend Cynthia Bogany
and fatally shot her 9-year-old daughter, Chirrisa Bogany, as she slept on
the couch.

After chasing a male identified as Bogany's boyfriend from the residence,
Eldridge returned to the living room and shot his 7-year-old son Terrell
in the shoulder.

Eldridge then chased Bogany out onto a stairwell and shot her to death as
she begged for her life.

Last-Minute Appeals

Eldridge's lawyers argue in appeals to courts that he is delusional and
clueless about his punishment.

The U.S. Supreme Court has held that prisoners must be aware of their
punishment to be eligible for execution.

Prosecutors respond that Eldridge has a history of faking mental illness
and is doing that now to avoid the Texas death chamber.
