First Statewide Gathering of Anti-Death Penalty Movement Taking Place This Weekend in Fort Worth; Local Members Embark on “Faithful Pilgrimage” from Dallas to Fort Worth

More than 130 grassroots advocates and supporters from across Texas will gather this Saturday, February 22, 2014 at University Christian Church in Fort Worth for the annual conference of the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (TCADP). This event, “Lighting the Way,” will feature workshops, a keynote address by Bob Ray Sanders of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and a panel discussion on how Texas is lighting the way on the death penalty issue. This is the first time that the TCADP Annual Conference, now in its 16th consecutive year, is taking place in Fort Worth.

Today, December 17, 2013, TCADP released its year-end report, Texas Death Penalty Developments in 2013: The Year in Review. According to the report, just one county accounted for one third of the nine new death sentences imposed by Texas juries this year.

Dallas County District Attorney Agrees to Another Delay in Execution of Kimberly McCarthy

*Update* State District Judge Larry Mitchell has ordered a modification of Kimberly McCarthy’s execution date to June 26, 2013. This comes after Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins agreed with a motion by McCarthy’s attorney to move the date based on pending legislation that may limit the application of the death penalty.

Kimberly McCarthy Execution Halted, DA Won’t Appeal

A State District Judge has stayed the execution of Kimberly McCarthy, which was scheduled to take place this evening. It would have been the first Texas execution in 2013 and the fourth execution involving a female since 1982. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office did not appeal the decision but said that the execution had been reset for April 3.
