According to a new report from the National Registry of Exonerations, 139 wrongfully convicted individuals were exonerated in 2017. This includes four people who had been sentenced to death. The leading cause in last year’s exonerations was official misconduct, particularly concealing exculpatory evidence.

On February 22, 2018, just 30 minutes before the execution of Thomas Whitaker was set to begin, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation sparing his life and commuting his death sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Executions and death sentences remained near-historic lows in 2017, according to a new report from the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (TCADP). Texas executed only seven people in 2017, matching 2016 for the lowest number of executions in two decades, and jurors voted for death in only four cases. For the first time since 1985, Harris County was not responsible for any of this year’s executions.
