The State of Texas is scheduled to execute Edgar Tamayo on January 22, 2014 for the 1994 murder of Officer Guy Gaddis of the Houston Police Department. Tamayo, who is a Mexican national, was denied his right to seek consular assistance after his arrest, as required under article 36 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. Read more about his case here. Please note that the scheduled execution of Edgardo Cubas has been moved from January 16 to May 29, 2014. Currently, seven additional executions are scheduled to take place in Texas over the next five months.

The TCADP Board of Directors is delighted to announce the recipients of the 2014 Annual Awards, which will be presented at our 2014 Annual Conference on February 22, 2014 in Fort Worth, Texas. Awardees include two state legislators, a legislative aide, two extraordinary activists who have advanced TCADP’s efforts in the Metroplex, and a longtime member in Houston.

83rd Legislative Session: The TCADP Lobby Corps has already been active at the Capitol. On January 22-23, 2013, we visited all 181 legislative offices and shared copies of TCADP’s 2012 year-end report, Texas Death Penalty Developments in 2012: The Year in Review. Lobby Corps members engaged in many positive conversations with legislators and their staffs. More than 120 anti-death penalty advocates from across Texas will gather this Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio for the annual conference of the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (TCADP). This event, “Seizing the Momentum – Creating the Climate for Change,” will feature workshops and a panel discussion on the impact of Texas’ changing demographics on the death penalty.
